Hands On: Tight Chutes Voyager CCW Fanny Pack

One of the basic laws of the universe is that “holsters were made for belts and jeans.” A few notable exceptions aside, you’re not going to have a pleasant experience wearing gym shorts with your G19 tucked down the front of them. Additionally, there are plenty of activities that make wearing an IWB holster uncomfortable when one would want to carry, hiking, biking, and extreme birdwatching among them. Perhaps you’re a loyal follower of sweats or pajama bottoms in public? What are you to do?

Enter the Voyager Fanny Pack.

Having a fanny pack for your concealed makes sense in many contexts. Not being bound to your trousers allows the pack to sit higher on the waist, allowing better comfortability and movement when you need it. I myself find that I usually ditch my G48 to the backpack when hiking since I inevitably end up getting stabbed by it a few miles down the trail when I carry it IWB. The Voyager keeps my firearm approximately where I’d have it IWB, but without the discomfort when active.

It’s also perfectly casual, providing arguably better concealment than IWB carry and shielding you from panicky sheeple everywhere. Living in a city has taught me a lot, but mostly that nothing feels as good as having some weight on you at the public park. Having a fanny pack saves me the trouble of picking clothing that caters to concealment when enjoying the downtown wildlife and blends me right in with the man-buns and lesbians.

The Voyager is specifically designed for use with its patented MARS system, which securely holds your choice of firearm inside the pack via magnets but is hassle free when drawing the firearm. This MARS system is the secret to my confidence in the Voyager. Spending a lot of time on the internet has alerted me to the importance of trigger protection in a holster (woe be upon ye if you still use leather anywhere near your trigger well), and at no point during my usage of the Voyager did I feel like the trigger was not being adequately protected. Drawing with the MARS is smooth, fast, and just as safe as a well practiced appendix draw.

While the MARS comes in any color, as long as it’s black, the Voyager itself can be ordered in a wide array of lurid hues, “neon splatter” being the most outrageous. Otherwise the standard run of ranger green, black, or various camouflages are available. When ordering you’re able to choose between left or right handed draws, which affects which orientation the fanny pack’s zipper rides, giving you plenty of opportunity to use the Voyager even if you’re a southpaw.

Our team of two went hands on with a right handed model for a few afternoons in our beautiful desert wasteland to get a feel for the Voyager, and the consensus was overwhelmingly positive. Since then we’ve lugged it along on many trips and activities. It’s hard to overestimate simplicity, but the Voyager is easy to use, intuitive, and perfect for its intended use. Hand sewn in Utah, we found the construction to be immaculate and had few complaints. More detailed specifics can be found on the Tight Chutes website, but it suffices us to say that ours has already found its way confidently into our CCW kits. If real American Made and functional gear is your thing, consider giving Tight Chutes a shot.
